Mission to Ukraine 2006

Since July 1994 Winton Salvation Army has felt led to help the people of Ukraine. They have worked with Ukranian salvationists in the city of Kiev and many other towns.  In July 2006 a group of Salvationists from Winton, Govan, Sheffield and Maltby will travel to Ukraine for their latest mission . An aid container is being filled and will be leaving this country in March, transported by International Aid. There will be two building projects at a TB Sanatorium in Donetsk and a children's disabled orphanage in Znamenka, three separate children's clubs in Kiev, Kirovograd and Odessa and footcare in both Kirovograd and Donetsk.

TB Sanatorium in Donetsk

This is a new project for Winton's visits to the Ukraine. The Salvation Army in Ukraine suggested this would be a very worthwhile mission as over 90 men live in appalling conditions waiting to die. They have one toilet and one hosepipe for a shower. Morale is obviously very low for both the patients and the staff. Showers are to be installed and rooms decorated. Individual washbags have been made for the men and bedding and clothes have been packed in the aid container to be given to this organisation.

Orphanage for disabled children in Znamenka

Winton Salvationists have visited and worked at this orphanage many times, offering help in many different ways. They have seen a dramatic improvement in the lives of the children and the morale of the wonderful director and her staff. With the help of money raised at Winton a bakery at the orphanage was set up which provides food for the children and a source of income from the sale of bread and cherry buns! Bathrooms and playrooms have been renovated, help has been given with feeding and playing with the children and massage has been offered. Equipment and toys have been sent to stimulate the children and improve their quality of life. Similar work is planned for July this year, concentrating on providing more bathrooms.
